FALL 2007 UPDATE Status of Army Corps Permit for the Sand Creek Bypass Project On October 3 the Army Corps of Engineers issued a final fill and dredge Permit for ITD's proposed 3 lane Highway in Sand Creek. But this is by no means THE END... of NICAN's efforts to derail the project and prevent the destruction of Sandpoint's waterfront. In fact we have been laying the groundwork for challenging a Corps to permit the project ever since ITD submitted its first Application for Permit in July of 2004. We have consistently pointed out the glaring deficiencies in ITD's information and analyses in preparation for the possibility that the Corps would cave in to political pressure (what else could it be?) and approve the project. See our comments below on the shortcomings of ITD's latest Response to the Corps' requests for more information. We are surprized that the Corps did not go back to ITD and direct them to cure the glaring deficiencies in that submittal before issuing the permit. The fact that they did not is to our advantage. NICAN is of course taking a hard look at challenging the Corps Decision to issue the Permit Meanwhile,
construction cannot begin until: * Idaho Department of Lands issues a Lake
Encroachment Permit for the project On September 10th NICAN submitted Comments to the Army
Corps of Engineers regarding There will be a lot more water under the bridge over Sand Creek before the 'City Beach Freeway' gets built... STAY TUNED...
